Haven't touched a paintbrush since high school? Got a kid who draws on everything except the paper? Or a teen who just needs somewhere to be? Good news — you don't need to be "good at art" to start. You just need to turn up 🎨

Creativity Hood is a beginner-friendly art studio in Garbutt, Townsville (1/363 Bayswater Road), and we've got a way in for pretty much everyone — kids from 5, teens, adults, total beginners, NDIS participants, schools and OSHC groups. Here's the full rundown of what we do, who it's for, and how to get started.

Beginner Art Classes for Kids and Teens in Townsville

Our weekly kids art classes run year-round on a subscription. That means your kid gets to dig into a huge range of materials over time — not just a single session and done. More time making = more magic happening ✨ Same class, same teacher, same little crew each week, and everything lines up with the Australian Curriculum (without the pressure of grades).

Rainbow Rebels (ages 5–8) — 45 minutes Painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and more. Short, playful projects with a new medium and theme every few weeks. Lots of colour mixing, texture and glorious mess. Perfect first art class for little ones.

Brush Buddies (ages 9–11) — 1 hour Real skills across watercolour, acrylic, charcoal and mixed media. Projects run over 2–4 weeks so kids actually learn techniques step by step — and get to finish something they're proud of.

Vibe Creators (teens, 12–16) — 1 hour For teens who want to connect with a likeminded crew. Longer self-paced projects (6–8 weeks) where they build their own style across watercolour, acrylic, charcoal and mixed media. Honestly the art matters, but so does having a place to belong 💜

Not sure yet? Grab a First Class Pass for $15. Book one trial class in any age group before you commit. Your kid meets the group, makes something, and you both get a feel for the studio. Book a First Class Pass

Beginner Art Classes for Adults in Townsville

Kids classes have been our bread and butter for years. But the grown-ups in our community kept asking "what about US?" — fair point. So we built four ways in for adults. No experience needed, no judgement, no pressure to make a masterpiece. Lots of mess encouraged.

1. Adult Art School — 6-week beginner courses Thursday mornings, one medium per block, so you actually build a skill instead of sampling something new every week and forgetting it. Our beginners drawing course just wrapped, and next up is a 6-week Beginners Clay Course (8 October – 12 November, Thursdays 9–11am, $360). Book the adult clay course

2. One-on-one tutoring — $90/hour, or $80/hour on our month-to-month package Want to build confidence before joining a group? Got a portfolio, exhibition or personal project on the go? Tutoring is built entirely around you — mornings, evenings, weekly, fortnightly, whatever fits. Basic materials included. Enquire about tutoring

3. Giggle Palette Club — Tuesday evenings Parallel play for grown-ups! Bring whatever you're working on — a painting, a sketchbook, a craft project — and make alongside other makers. We supply the big table, the kettle and the company. Chat if you want, headphones in if you don't. $20 a week with membership, or $30 casual. Book Giggle Palette Club

4. One-off workshops and group paint nights New stand-alone workshops drop throughout the year — seasonal ones, guest artists, whatever we're curious about that month. Great for dipping a toe in or dragging a mate along. See what's on

Got a group? Birthdays, hens nights, work team things, mum-friend catch-ups — bring your people, pick a painting (or ask for a custom design) and we'll walk everyone through it. You bring the wine and snacks 🍷 we bring the easels, paint and canvas. Pricing depends on group size — ask for a quote.

"The adult classes have been AMAZING! Hubby and I have had a great time and have really surprised ourselves with the level of art work we have produced." — Teigen Boulter, adult student

Beginner Pottery Classes in Townsville (6-Week Course)

Permission to play. Permission to get messy. Wonky is welcome, and nobody's making a perfect pot in week one! Our 6-week beginner clay course is taught by guest potter Stella, and it's made for total beginners who want to try pottery without signing up for weekly classes. It starts 6 October and runs through to 13 November, with multiple class slots.

Why Creativity Hood Is Great for Beginners

Hi, I'm Kellie! I started out as a high school visual arts teacher (10+ years in education) and kept asking myself — what if art class was something kids actually looked forward to? Not about grades, just about the joy of making stuff and growing as a person. With a background in expressive art therapy, I started tutoring one-on-one... and it grew. Now we're a crew of 10 staff and 100+ students 💜

Here's what that looks like in the studio:

  • There are no mistakes, only discoveries. We celebrate effort and experimenting over "perfect". "Not yet" beats "can't" every time.

  • Our Kindness Policy. Every student is loved, accepted and valued — whatever their beliefs, looks, abilities or personality. Zero room for bullying. Proudly inclusive and LGBTQIA+ friendly.

  • Real skills, taught step by step. Experienced teachers and professional artists scaffold every project so beginners build confidence fast.

  • Your art gets celebrated. Students can exhibit their work, join community art projects and even sell their creations in our little shop.

  • Levels from beginner to advanced. Students are recognised as they progress at our Creative Brilliance Awards night — for technical skill AND values like kindness, imagination and resilience.

  • Two studio cats. Teddy and Smockles are basically staff at this point 🐾

"Highly recommend Creativity Hood for art classes! My 7 year old loves attending every week. What I love most is the creative, safe, exciting and inclusive environment." — Claudia Williamson, parent
