Teens learning to draw anime at Creativity Hood art studio in Townsville

If your kid (or you!) has sketchbooks full of anime characters and is itching to level up, you're in the right place. Creativity Hood is a real art studio in Garbutt, Townsville. Our 1:1 tutoring program is one of the best ways to properly learn anime and manga art. That means one-on-one with an art teacher, not a YouTube tutorial on repeat.

Why 1:1 tutoring works so well for anime art

Anime artists are all over the place skill-wise. One kid has been drawing every day for three years and wants to nail dynamic poses. Another is just starting out and keeps getting stuck on faces. A group class can't give both of them what they need, but 1:1 can.

Every session is built around the student in front of us. Their favourite shows, their original characters, the stuff that frustrates them, the stuff they want to be able to do by the end of term.

Things we can work on include:

  • Anime faces and expressions. Proportions, eyes, and getting emotion into a face

  • Hair. Spiky, flowing, braided, all of it 😅

  • Anatomy and poses. Moving from stiff characters to ones with movement and attitude

  • Character design. Creating their OWN original characters, not just copying

  • Manga panels and storytelling. Layouts, pacing, and speech bubbles

  • Line work, shading and colour. Traditional or digital, depending on what the student uses

  • Building a portfolio. Great for teens thinking about senior art or creative careers

How the program works

This isn't a "pop in once and done" thing. More time making = more skills that actually stick. Most students start with 3 months, then we go from there.

Session 1: Goal setting (1.5 hours)The first session is a longer deep dive. We get to know the student, look at their current work, chat about what they love and where they want to go, and set real goals together. From there we map out a plan built just for them.

Then: Weekly 45-minute sessionsAfter that, it's weekly one-on-one sessions working toward those goals. Each week builds on the last. We teach techniques, practise, give feedback, and celebrate the wins, big and small.

After the first 3 months, we check in on progress and set new goals. Most students are amazed at how far they've come 🌟

What it costs

Can students work digitally?Yes, if they use a tablet or iPad for their art, we can work with that. Traditional pencil and paper is great too.

Is it just anime?Anime is a huge draw (pun intended), but 1:1 tutoring can focus on whatever the student wants to learn: drawing, painting, portfolio prep and more.
