Where Can I Get Mixed-Media Art Classes in Queensland?
Updated: Sep 30
Paint. Charcoal. Torn magazine pages. Clay. Ink. A bit of glitter if we're feeling fancy ✨ Mixed media is basically the art version of "use whatever's in the cupboard" — and it's one of my absolute favourite ways to create.
So if you're asking "where can I get mixed-media art classes in Queensland?" — especially 1:1 sessions or NDIS-friendly art sessions — come find us up north at Creativity Hood, 1/363 Bayswater Road, Garbutt, Townsville.

First up... what IS mixed media?
Mixed media just means combining more than one material in a single artwork. Think:
Watercolour washes with ink or pen drawn over the top
Collage built up from torn paper, fabric and found bits, then painted into
Acrylic paint layered with oil pastels and texture paste
Charcoal drawings with pops of colour
Clay pieces painted and finished with other materials
There are no strict rules, which is exactly why it's so good. It lets people experiment, layer, change their mind, and find what they love working with. And if something goes a bit sideways? You glue something over it and keep going. Happy little Bob Ross accidents, mixed-media style :)
1:1 art tutoring — your own time, your own pace
Group classes are brilliant (we love our Rainbow Rebels, Brush Buddies and Vibe Creators!) but they're not the right fit for everyone. Some people want to really dig into one skill. Some want the undivided attention. Some just feel more comfortable creating without a room full of people.
That's what our 1:1 tutoring and mentoring sessions are for. It's you (or your kid) and one of our teachers, working on exactly what you want to work on.
What 1:1 sessions can look like:
Building drawing skills from the ground up — shading, proportion, perspective, drawing in 3D
Exploring mixed-media techniques and figuring out which materials you click with
Working on a portfolio, a school art assignment, or a personal project
Developing your own style and building confidence as an artist
And here's the thing I really want people to know — you don't need to be "good" at art, and you don't need to be planning to sell your art or turn it into a business. Mentoring here is about growing as an artist and feeling more confident in what you make. That's real and it matters, full stop.
1:1 sessions are open to all ages — kids, teens and adults.
How it works: sessions are $90 an hour, or $80 an hour on our month-to-month tutoring package. Most people start with 3 months and go from there. Every package is personalised to the student, so we work out what you want to learn and build the sessions around you. No cookie-cutter lesson plans here!
NDIS art sessions in Townsville
This part is very close to my heart 💜
We run NDIS arts sessions for participants who want to build creative skills, confidence and connection in a space that's genuinely supportive. Mixed media is a great fit here, because there's no one "right" way to do it — people can choose materials that feel good to them, work at their own pace, and create something that's completely theirs.
How we support participants:
Clear, step-by-step instructions and visual aids
Flexible ways of working — we adapt to the person, not the other way around
Sensory-friendly options (some people love the squish of clay, others would rather stick with pencils and paper — both are great)
Patience, encouragement and zero judgement. Our Kindness Policy applies to everyone who walks through the door
We're proudly neurodivergent-affirming and support people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety and a whole range of needs. Sessions can be 1:1, or small group if connecting with others is part of the goal.
We don't just do this in our studio, either. We partner with Access Support Services and head out to their facility to run art sessions for their clients — we pack up the paint, paper, clay and good vibes and bring the studio to them 🎨
Not sure how art sessions fit into your plan? Give us a buzz and we'll chat it through with you (and your support coordinator if you have one).
Why mixed media works so well 1:1
Honestly, mixed media and 1:1 sessions are a dream combo:
It's tailored. We can follow your interests — if you light up when you're tearing paper for collage, we go there.
It builds confidence fast. Layering means nothing is ever "ruined." That takes the pressure right off.
It's great for fine motor skills and sensory exploration. Cutting, tearing, squishing, brushing, smudging — lots of different ways to use your hands.
It's a safe outlet for big feelings. Sometimes it's easier to paint it or scribble it out than to say it.
